Kazan State Veterinary Academy

History

Kazan State Veterinary Academy stands as the oldest veterinary educational institution in Russia, with a distinguished history spanning over 150 years. Founded on May 31, 1873, by order of Alexander II as the N.E. Bauman Kazan Veterinary Institute, the academy was strategically established in Kazan due to the city’s position on a major route for cattle herds being transported from Asia to Europe. This location made it a crucial center for veterinary education and animal health protection along one of the continent’s most important trade corridors. In 1995, the institute received its present name, formally becoming the Kazan State Academy of Veterinary Medicine named after N.E. Bauman. Throughout its 150-year existence, the academy has cultivated numerous scientific schools of excellence and trained more than 22,000 veterinarians and agricultural specialists who have achieved significant success both within Russia and internationally. The institution remains a cornerstone of veterinary education, maintaining its commitment to advancing animal health and agricultural science.
