History
Russian State University for the Humanities traces its origins to the Russian Academy of Sciences’ long commitment to educational development. Throughout history, the Academy contributed to founding major institutions including St. Petersburg University, Kazan University, and other prominent centers. In the early 1990s, recognizing a critical gap in humanities education in modern Russian society, the Academy of Sciences initiated an educational program. In 1992, the Russian Humanities Education Center was established with contributions from leading scientists including academics A.O. Chubaryan, V.L. Makarov, A.A. Guseinov, and V.S. Stepin. Less than two years later, on February 24, 1994, it became a state educational institution offering higher vocational education. New faculties opened progressively based on administrators’ initiatives. On August 21, 1998, it transformed into Humanities State University. After ten years of operation, it acquired academic status and was renamed Academic State University of Humanities. Academician A.A. Chubaryan serves as president, with D.V. Fomin-Nilov as rector.
