History
Northwest State Medical University was founded in 2011 through merger of two oldest Russian medical educational institutions: Petersburg Medical Academy of Higher Education and Petersburg State Medical Academy. The merger created a unified comprehensive medical education center combining expertise and resources from both predecessor institutions. The university’s activities are based on principles of close interaction and coordination between educational, clinical, and research activities, enabling training of competent specialists with modern knowledge applicable to clinical practice. The institution builds upon centuries of Russian medical education tradition while incorporating contemporary medical science and practice standards. The merged university inherited extensive clinical facilities, research laboratories, and faculty expertise from both founding institutions. This consolidation strengthened Saint Petersburg’s position as a major medical education center in Russia. The university maintains commitment to advancing medical knowledge through research while training successive generations of healthcare professionals serving Russia and international communities. The institutional merger preserved valuable scientific schools and educational traditions from both predecessor organizations.
