History
Petersburg State Civil Aviation University originated in the early 1900s when courses and schools were established on initiative of A. Mikhailovich Romanov for training flight technical personnel. The Saint Petersburg aviation training school marked the beginning of aviation education formation. From 1907, aviation lectures were delivered at the Polytechnic Institute of the Petersburg Institute of Railway Engineers. In 1918, an aviation technical school, aviation engine training courses, and observer pilots school opened in Petrograd. By late 1920s, a training complex for civil air squadron was created in Leningrad. In 1930, the Leningrad Civil Air Fleet Engineers Institute was established, transferred from Railway Engineers Institute to Air Transport Department. During war years, departments transferred to Air Force Engineering Academy, playing important roles in Civil Aviation University establishment. Post-war rapid air transport expansion necessitated jet aircraft introduction, improved engineering complexes, airport development, and air transport management structures. In 1955, the USSR Council of Ministers established the Civil Air Fleet Higher Aviation School. By 2004, the institution received university status reflecting its achievements in aviation education and training.
