History
Petersburg State Maritime Technical University originated from the Polytechnic Institute Shipbuilding Department established between 1899 and 1902. Between 1917 and 1930, the shipbuilding department underwent reorganization and renaming within the Polytechnic Institute structure. In 1930, an independent Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute was created based on the Polytechnic Institute’s shipbuilding department, establishing a dedicated maritime education institution. In 1934, a sailing department opened expanding educational scope. An Academic Council of 35 members was established in 1935. In 1937, the institute achieved first place in academic performance in Leningrad. In 1939, the Faculty of Engineering and Economics was established, broadening curriculum beyond pure technical instruction. In 1962, the faculty of distance education opened, extending educational access. In 1992, the university adopted its current name, Petersburg State Maritime Technical University. Throughout 85+ years of operation, the institution has trained tens of thousands of experts including ministers, statesmen, renowned designers, and engineers. The university evolved into Russia’s only educational institution comprehensively training world-class specialist engineers across all shipbuilding specialties.
