History
Petersburg State University of Aeronautics and Spacecraft was established in 1941 as the Petersburg Aviation Institute. The institution’s creation responded to urgent need for specialists with higher education in Saint Petersburg, where aircraft manufacturing, engine construction, and vehicle construction enterprises operated alongside significant scientific and pedagogical potential. The Leningrad Aviation Institute initially operated three faculties: aircraft engineering, instrument making, and engine building. More than 1,200 students enrolled in the first academic year, with classes beginning February 15, 1941. World War II profoundly impacted the institution. By June 1941, approximately 400 students participated in war efforts, increasing to include institute staff by August. By autumn 1941, institute workshops conducted aircraft and tank engine repairs, successfully maintaining operations throughout wartime. During the war, rapid development of aircraft instruments and control systems created demand for qualified specialists. In 1945, the institute transformed into the Leningrad Institute of Aviation and Space Vehicles, expanding its mission beyond aircraft engineering. The institution evolved into a comprehensive aerospace education center serving Russia’s aviation and space industries.
