History
Russian State Hydrometeorological University was founded in 1930 on the basis of Moscow State University, establishing the world’s first hydrometeorological institution. The university’s creation responded to urgent national needs arising from development of the North Sea route, hydroelectric power station construction, fishing and shipping expansion, and ocean research expansion. The institution faced challenging circumstances during establishment and early development, yet faculty and students published influential textbooks and monographs establishing the university’s reputation. Scientific research began from the institution’s first day and continued advancing knowledge. During World War II, the institute relocated to Leninabad in 1941, returned to Moscow in 1943, then moved to Leningrad in 1944. Post-war institutional reorganization proceeded amid faculty dispersal across cities. In 1970, the Faculty of Ocean Science was established, with various buildings completed. In 1989, the Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring Service became the university’s strategic partner. International recognition came in 1994 when the university received regional meteorology training center status from the World Meteorological Organization. University status was granted in 1998, with subsequent branch openings in Tuapse and Rostov. In 2011, the university received recognition for implementing Tempus and Erasmus Mundus projects, and a technological platform for environmental development technologies was established.
